This morning while I was on the subway, it occured to me that men here forfeit their seats to women, they’re just not as obvious about it as men in the south. There also doesn’t seem to be the social pressure on men to be a complete gentlemen. In Texas guys expect other guys to give up seats and open doors and pick things up and all sorts of other things, so they adhere to that social pressure.
This morning on the subway there were a few seats that opened up at one of the stops and a bunch of guys were standing. No one sat down, they left those seats open for whomever may have been getting on at that stop and, coincidentally, all women sat down. It was only where there were open seats and no women waiting for a seat that I saw a man sit down. They do it here too, they’re just not as obvious about it. It wasn’t like the men said, “go ahead” or something, they just left the seat open. I like New York more and more.
